Hearing God’s Voice Amidst Distractions
It is important to know that we are God’s children, and as His children, we can hear His voice. God speaks to His children, and He desires that they hear Him.
A familiar passage, Psalm 23:1, says, “The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.” Likewise, Psalm 100:3 says, “Know that the Lord, He is God. It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, the sheep of His pasture.”
These two passages fit together beautifully. According to Psalm 100, we are God’s sheep, and according to Psalm 23, the Lord is our Shepherd. A shepherd leads, guides, and cares for his sheep.
Throughout Scripture, Jesus identifies Himself as the Good Shepherd. He says that His sheep hear His voice, and they know Him. We also see the attitude of faithful shepherds throughout the Bible. They do not abandon their sheep when they wander or are in danger. A perfect example is David, who fought both a lion and a bear to protect his father’s sheep. This shows the heart of a true shepherd. (1 Samuel 17)
In the same way, God never sees His children going in the wrong direction and simply leaves them there. He cares deeply for us and continually leads us.
This brings us to Romans 8:14: “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” In other words, if you are a child of God, you are led by the Spirit of God.
According to Ephesians 1:13 to 14, the Holy Spirit is the seal of our inheritance. When you become God’s child, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within you. Therefore, in your decisions, actions, and daily life, remember that you are not alone, you are being led by the Spirit of God.
God communicates His will for our lives through His voice. Everything that happens in our lives should be understood in light of God’s will. Therefore, even amidst destruction, confusion, and the many distractions around us, we must learn to hear God’s voice so that we may know His will.
There are many ways God reveals His will. I will mention a few.
1. The Written Will (or Written Voice) of God
The greatest and most reliable way to know God’s voice is through His written Word, the Scriptures.
Psalm 40:8 reminds us of delighting in God’s will, while Hebrews 4:12 tells us,
“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
The Scriptures are our highest authority (Sola Scriptura). Every experience, impression, dream, or revelation must be tested by God’s Word. The Bible reveals God’s character and His general will for His children. It is the greatest tool for discerning His voice.
2. The Revealed Will of God
God also reveals His will personally to His children. He may speak through dreams, visions, impressions, convictions, or other Spirit led means. These are personal revelations, but they must always agree with the written Word of God.
How Can We Hear God’s Voice Amidst Distractions?
1. Total surrender to God. A surrendered heart is more sensitive to God’s leading.
2. Give yourself to the wisdom of Scripture. The more you know God’s Word, the easier it becomes to discern His voice from every other voice.
3. Walk in obedience. Obedience increases spiritual sensitivity.
4. Do not give room to sin. Sin dulls spiritual sensitivity and hinders fellowship with God.
5. Pray and be patient. Do not rush God. Learn to wait on Him until His direction becomes clear.
6. Grow spiritually. Spiritual maturity enables you to recognize God’s voice even in seasons of confusion and distraction.
7. Be spiritually sensitive. God may choose to speak through dreams, visions, or other Spirit led means. Remain attentive to His leading.
8. Pray in the Spirit often. Giving yourself to prayer, including praying in tongues, strengthens your fellowship with God and sharpens your spiritual sensitivity.
9. Be humble. Do not come before God with a predetermined conclusion. Be open to whatever He wants to say, even if it differs from your expectations.
10. Be consistent in devotion. Spend regular time with God. The truth is that if you genuinely belong to Him, He will not leave you in error indefinitely. As your Shepherd, He will guide you back to the right path.
11. Be open to godly counsel. God often speaks through mature believers, elders, and wise friends. Listen to biblical counsel.
Finally, remember that God is sovereign, even over our choices. Even when we make mistakes, God is able to guide, correct, restore, and accomplish His purposes in the lives of His children. As our Good Shepherd, He does not abandon us. He faithfully leads us, even amidst destruction, until we walk in His will.
